From the Gym to the City
GROW DENIM was the first denim produced by heavy.
When heavy. was launched in 2011, there weren't many climbing-specific apparel options available in Japan.
Climbing gyms weren't as common as they are today, and climbing was still a somewhat niche culture for a limited group of people.
Despite this, there was a sense that climbing gyms would gradually increase.
I believed that if more people started climbing in gyms and climbing became part of daily life, climbing wear should also become more integrated into daily wear.
At the time, climbing and outdoor wear often featured loose silhouettes, designs with many pockets like cargo pants, and sports-style elastic waistbands.
It was clear they were made for ease of movement.
However, there weren't many options that I genuinely wanted to wear.
What I wanted to create was a simpler pair of pants.
Pants that you could climb hard in at the gym, brush off the chalk and dust, and then head straight out into the city.
Pants you could comfortably wear when meeting someone you like.
Pants that would work as both climbing wear and streetwear.
With that ideal in mind, I created GROW DENIM.
Looks like regular denim
Key design considerations were a slim fit and no unnecessary additions.
Climbing pants often have a gusset in the crotch area.
However, the appearance of such a gusset didn't align with my aesthetic for GROW DENIM.
Instead of adding a separate part later, I designed the pattern from the start to allow for freedom of movement in the crotch area.
This approach aimed for a clean silhouette while minimizing bagginess.
The knee area was designed three-dimensionally to naturally follow movements like lifting legs, squatting, and lunging.
Yet, the goal was for them to still look like regular denim.
"Are these really climbing pants?"
I think that level of surprise was just right.
The name heavy.
The name heavy. also carries a bit of rebellion.
In the world of climbing and outdoor activities, lightweight, functional, and rational items are often highly valued.
Of course, these are important qualities.
But I wanted to approach climbing wear from the opposite perspective.
Not just lightweight, but pants you'd want to wear in the city.
Not just functional, but also stylish.
Not just outdoorsy, but also fitting into everyday life.
GROW DENIM was born from this sentiment.
The First GROW DENIM
The first GROW DENIM model wasn't the PRINT or ICON of today, but featured red ribbon tape arranged in an X-shape.
The tape had a floral pattern woven into it, so from a distance, you saw a strong red X.
Up close, you could see the slightly cute floral pattern.
It was a somewhat unique pair, blending coolness with cuteness.
From there, it evolved into PRINT, with a stronger streetwear impression.
And then into ICON, with a single embroidered accent, suitable for wearing naturally even with a jacket.
Choosing the Right Pair for You
Today, GROW DENIM is worn by both men and women.
Many climbers are slender, and I sometimes hear them say, "I wear an XS."
It still surprises me a little to hear that adult men choose XS.
But perhaps that's also characteristic of GROW DENIM.
Choosing a pair that suits you, regardless of body type or gender.
Being able to wear them naturally, both at the gym and in the city.
Easy to move in, blending into daily life, and making you want to wear them for a long time.
GROW DENIM is heavy.'s first product.
And even now, it remains the standard for heavy.'s craftsmanship.
